Professional Treatments for Cellulite

The latest non-surgical techniques claim to make a real difference in improving cellulite. To help determine the effectiveness of a treatment we can look at clinical studies and whether it has approval from the FDA which shows the product as been rigorously tested.

My top professional treatments for cellulite are:

Endermologie  (or VelaShape)

Acoustic (Shock) Wave Therapy

Endermologie (Lipomassage)

Lipomassage by endermologie is the most effective treatment for cellulite. It was first developed for the treatment of scars and burns. Endermologie involves 2 motor-operated rollers rotating over the skin in different directions together with controlled suction. During this process the skin gently folds and unfolds allowing for smooth and regulated deep tissue massage. As the viscosity of the subcutaneous layers decreases, blood and lymphatic flow increases, allowing the elimination of excess fluid and metabolites and improving overall cellular function.

Benefits of Endermologie:

  • Improvement in Lymph flow
  • Reduction in body circumference
  • Improvement of Skin Tone and Radiance
  • Improvement in the appearance of scar tissue and burns

A endermologie treatment session usually lasts around 35 minutes and costs from £60 a session. It is recommended that 14-18 treatments are done once or twice a week for optimum results. Then once a month follow up treatments to maintain results.

Estimated Cost: £900 (15 treatments)

Endermologie Reviews

'I did a course of 10, twice a week, and saw a huge difference. My cellulite is definitely reduced. I was a size 14 and now I'm a loose 12, and I only cut down a bit on fat and sweet things, and on portion sizes. It's expensive, but not what I've got out of it'

Cons

  • May not work for everyone, results have been variable.
  • Temporary effect - continual maintenance treatments are required
  • Treatments are time consuming and can become repetitive

Rating: 9/10 Endermologie is an affordable cellulite treatment compared to the more high tech treatments available.

    Acoustic Wave Therapy

Acoustic Wave Therapy is a fairly new treatment for cellulite reduction. This treatment uses acoustic wave pulses that induce vibration in the connective tissues. This action leads to increased vascularisation (blood flow) and the creation of a new, thickened band of collagen in the upper and mid portions of the skin. This results in restored elasticity in the connective tissues and smoother less dimpled skin.

The number of sessions required are fewer than other treatments such as endermologie. Major improvement can be seen in as few as 3 to 4 treatments. It is recommended to have 6 treatments; twice per week for 3 weeks. Time for 1 session depends on the amount of areas you require to be treated.

    VelaShape (previously VelaSmooth)

VelaShape is a non-surgical high-tech treatment for cellulite. It uses Elos technology which is the combination of bi-polar radiofrequency, infrared rays, plus negative pressure and tissue manipulation. This is achieved by  vacuum suctions and mechanical massage which smooth out the skin and connective tissues, the same idea behind endermologie. VelaShape combines endermologie together with heat treatment using infrared rays and radio frequency (RF). Infrared heats the skin up to a depth of 5mm while radio frequency heats the skin 5 to 15 mm in depth.

    VelaShape Benefits:

    Increases metabolism of fat stores

    Increases lymphatic drainage

Reduces the size of actual fat chambers

Treatments are roughly £200 per session and 6-10 treatments are recommended. Monthly maintenance treatments are also recommended.

    Accent

Accent uses radio frequencies to target the top 2 layers of fat. Radio frequencies heat up the skin boosting skin circulation, break down fibrosis tissue and promotes the removal and re-absorption of fluids. The bands holding fat cells are tightened creating a smoother appearance and tightening loose skin.

Six sessions are recommended every 2 weeks. Treatments are from £250 a session.

Review: Accent is best for older people with cellulite who also have loose skin. Radio frequency is often used as an anti ageing treatment and is very beneficial in tightening loose skin which in turn will improve cellulite appearance. Accent is one of the more expensive treatments but results have been good especially in the older age group.

    Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy involves injecting vitamins and medicines into the mesoderm layer of the skin. It reduces fat deposits and increases the blood circulation to the blood. Mesotherapy is used for a wide variety of health problems.

    Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A manual massage that promotes lymphatic drainage helping the removal of toxins and fluids from the body. This will prevent fluid from solidifying and adhering to fat cells and collagen fibres. Also the entire body blood circulation will be improved.

Remember: it is very important to drink plenty of water after any cellulite treatment that releases toxins into the body's circulation

    Subcision

Subcision is a surgical treatment for cellulite done under local aesthetic. Incisions are made into the subcutaneous fat layer using needles.

Operation does cause bruising and a compression belt must be worn on the treatment area for 2-3 weeks.

    Why can't Liposuction remove cellulite?

Liposuction involves removing fat from the deeper layers of fat. Fat is not removed from the subcutaneous layer during liposuction as swelling, scarring and bruising often occur. Liposuction is a very effective surgical procedure for body contouring but is not a treatment for cellulite.
