Hormones and Stretch Marks

Stretch marks occur during periods of hormonal change and imbalance. During puberty stretch marks are commonly formed on the legs and hips. While during pregnancy stretch marks most often form on the abdomen, breasts and buttocks. The 6 to 9 month stage is when the skin is most vulnerable to the formation of stretch marks. However they can appear before that time and even appear after the pregnancy.

Stretch marks are often a symptom of Cushing's Syndrome. Cushing's syndrome occurs when the body produces too much cortisol. Excess cortisol has many effects on the body including the breakdown of proteins in the body including collagen. Collagen is a major component of the skin.
